About the owner

RTR Practice Advisors was founded by our CEO, Ben Holt, M.D.

Dr. Holt is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who had a very busy and successful practice specializing in total joint replacements for 29 years with the Columbia Orthopaedic Group.  He then retired from practice in 2022.

He experienced the ups and downs of the clinical and business sides of healthcare during his 29 years of practice.  Just like all private practice groups, Dr. Holt's group had to evolve and adapt in order to remain the market leader in orthopaedics in their area.

And since he was in charge of his own retirement preparations, he received "graduate level training" at the school of hard knocks.

Early in his investing experience he was burned in the 1998-1999 dot-com bubble of the stock market.  So, he rotated more into real estate and then was burned in the 2007-2008 housing bubble of the real estate market.

And after going through a divorce, and the associated financial impact, he wasn't sure he could ever retire.  But persistence paid off.

So, despite bad luck and the dark side of time and chance, he was still able to retire at a relatively young age.

His retirement was less about disliking work and more about being disenchanted with the direction of organized healthcare.

In his career, Dr. Holt was a strong patient advocate.  He arranged his practice to be extremely efficient.  He hated to make patients wait. He worked very hard to stay on time. It was not always possible, but any delay was never for lack of effort.  Not only did he work hard at clinic efficiency but also in the operating room.  He led by example with his OR team and together, they had the best on-time start rating and the best turnover times of the entire OR.

Today in healthcare, there is an epidemic of frustrated physicians.  Dr. Holt understands their frustrations. But he also understands many of the solutions.

It became clear to Dr. Holt that one of the main keys to enjoying clinical practice was being financially independent.

The doctors he knew who were financially independent practiced differently.  Since they did not "need" the income from their work, they worked the way they chose.

Some chose to decrease the number of patients they saw.  And to decrease the number of surgeries they performed.  And to do only easier, bread and butter cases.

Others chose to do only harder surgical cases and refer the easier ones to younger partners.  Their view was that these harder cases required years of experience.  Since they had that experience, and since, because of financial freedom, they could afford to allot the extra time these cases required.  They weren't worried so much about additional income each month.

As you can see, being financially independent totally changed the way these doctors practiced.

And they loved it!

Dr. Holt started RTR Practice Advisors in order to offer advice and assistance to physicians who are frustrated in their practices.  He understands their frustrations. But he also knows the path to enjoyment.

His path to retirement was very up and down.

But it proved that, if he could retire relatively young, others can too!

They just need a clear map.

RTR Practice Advisors was founded to provide that map.
